80's throwback

On December 2nd, 2011, we are having an 80's throwback party at Panama Joe's on 2nd street in Long Beach, California.  We will be selling wristbands for 5 dollars that will be for 2 for 1 drinks! The event will start at 5pm and we will also be auctioning off some really cool items such as surfboards, sunglasses, clothes, and more! Check out our facebook for more info, and come to our event!

Burke Middle School

Today, we presented to the 6th Graders in Mrs. Rodriguez's class at Burke Middle School in Pico Rivera about the importance of recycling.
We told them all about the items that are able to be recycled, including plastics, aluminum, paper, and other objects such as cardboard boxes.  We informed the students about where their closest recycling centers would be, and how important it is to see which one pays the most so they can receive the most profit from their recycling endeavors. We also showed taught them the three R's. Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle, and how to perform these to save our planet for themselves, and their children some day. The students seemed to have a lot of fun and had many questions afterwards. :)

Ignite Freedom is a CSULB Communication Organization that is working towards a goal of educating society about the global social issues of modern-day slavery, sex trafficking, child labor, and human rights violations. I am part of a small group of students participating in a service-learning program this year. Our class mission is to raise money for a charity we feel strongly about. While large non-profit charities are needed and much appreciated; we chose a different route. Freedom & Fashion is only a few years old and was started by college students, like me, who wanted to bring a change into world in a way no one has done before. Freedom and Fashion is a fashion orientated creative arts ministry and organization that serves as a resource hub for fair-trade businesses and non-profit organizations dealing with labor and sex trafficking.

Description of what we're standing for

Freedom & Fashion addresses the injustices of modern day slavery by shedding light on the purchasing power of conscious consumerism, increasing the demand for socially responsible and ethically produced goods and ensuring they are readily available to consumers. Freedom and Fashion believes in educating the public about what social injustice looks like. There are more slaves today than in the Trans Atlantic slave trade. Trafficking made over 32 billion dollars alone last year. They want to show people what they buy, watch, and participate in, affect those who are oppressed. As a hub for fair-trade, Freedom and Fashion showcases organizations and companies that are already doing the front line work of educating, producing and empowering. Freedom and Fashion promotes these organizations and raises awareness for these shows on the runway, in our magazine, on our blog, and in our short films. In addition, people can purchase the merchandise on the day of the event in the various booths.

About us!

As a class group, we plan on raising money for Freedom & Fashion through donations, our silent auction and Panama Joe’s Bar Night (hey, we are college students just trying to get other college students involved!) Our events are next month and we would be more than delighted to see you there! We have been fortunate enough to receive some really cool donations. Whether it’s a brand new surfboard shaped in Australia or a 2-dollar donation; it all makes a difference. If you can find it in your heart or your budget to donate, we would very much appreciate it. Your contributions will always be aimed at spreading freedom and love.
